Here Comes the Sun: Winter Solstice Marks Return of Light

According to the Icelandic Met Office, the sun will rise at 11:30 am this morning and set at 3:30 pm, giving Iceland only four hours of daylight on the Winter Solstice. Today the sun in the Northern Hemisphere is at its lowest point all year. After the solstice, its trajectory rises and days lengthen. RÚV reported first.

The winter solstice marks the longest night and shortest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. The solstice and the subsequent return of light have traditionally been celebrated around the world with festivals and rituals since prehistoric times. In Iceland, families will spend the slowly brightening days busily preparing for Christmas.
