Lagarfljót River Has Flooded (Egilsstaðir)

Lagarfljót river, the river flowing through Egilsstaðir, the largest town in Eastern Iceland has begun to flood. This is due to the torrential rain that has submerged Eastern Iceland this week.

Chances are the water might flood over the road between Egilsstaðir and Fellabær. The water level is already two meters (6.5 feet) higher than usual and is expected to rise even further later today.

“Lagarfljót river looks like a giant fjord, as viewed from the bridge. All hayfields to the west are nearly submerged in water and the water levels are quite high,“ town foreman Kári Ólason told RÚV.

According to Kári, there hasn‘t been much rain in Egilsstaðir. Instead, the rainfall from Fljótsdalur valley has made its way down to Lagarfljót, causing the flood.

South-East and Eastern Iceland have faced torrential rain for the past days, with severe damage to the main road, as well as bridges. The country‘s main road has been severed at Hólmsá, and around forty sheep are believed to have drowned.
