Tomorrow, the Nordic Beach Cleanup takes place on Snæfellsnes peninsula, West Iceland. This is part of a joint effort by several Nordic not-for-profit organizations to save our oceans from litter. Beach cleanups will take place simultaneously in all the Nordic countries.
The Icelandic team—made up of the Icelandic Environment Association (Landvernd), Svæðisgarðurinn Snæfellsnes, EarthCheck Snæfellsnesi, Lions Iceland and the Blue Army—has organized beach cleanups at three sites in Snæfellsnes. Numerous volunteers plan to participate, among them Iceland’s Minister for the Environment and Natural Resources Björt Ólafsdóttir.
The cleanups will take place at Skógarnes, Bervík and Hofgarðar, on Snæfellnes peninsula. Refreshments will be served all day at Breiðablik community center and entertainment provided between 4 and 6 pm.
Registration is required for those who wish to participate. You can register here. For further information (in Icelandic) and a map of the sites, click here.
A press release from the Icelandic Environment Association notes that on average, every Icelander uses about 40 kg (88 lbs) of plastic packaging a year, meaning that the nation as a whole uses about 13,000 tons of plastic packaging a year. That is the weight of 13,000 elephants. Just over a quarter of the plastic is recycled; the rest ends up in landfills.
