Reykjavík Recorded Highest Temperature since 2008 Yesterday

The temperature reached 21.6°C (70.88°F) in Reykjavík at 3 pm yesterday, the highest temperature recorded in the capital since 2008, reports Vísir.

This was also the first time this year the temperature topped 20°C (68°F) in the capital, according to meteorologist Elín Björk Jónasdóttir. Temperatures had, however, been higher elsewhere in the country, including at Þingvellir where it reached 23.6°C (74.48°F).

Elín Björk stated that the temperature in Reykjavík yesterday could be explained by the fact that northerly and easterly winds had been strong enough to keep the sea breezes away from the city. This is necessary for temperatures to reach the level they did in this part of the country.

Elín Björk predicted similar conditions today, although a little cooler. “Temperatures should be highest in the southwest corner and up-country in South Iceland.”

Another meteorologist, Trausti Jónsson, noted on his Facebook page that Reykjavík reached a high of 21.3°C (70.34°F) last year, but that the temperature in the capital had not risen above 22°C (71.6°F) since 2008.
