Ísafjörður town, in the Icelandic Westfjords, has set up a three-dimensional pedestrian crossing in the central part of town.

According to Gauti Ívar Halldórsson, CEO of Vegamálun, the company behind the peculiar road-painting, the purpose is to lower traffic speed.

“A pedestrian crossing like this makes it look like there’s something blocking the road,” Gísli told Vísir. That way, drivers will automatically slow down their cars. Gísli explains that the idea originally came from New Delhi, the capital of India.

The idea itself didn’t take long to implement, having been proposed earlier this month, taking only a few weeks to get approval from the Icelandic Transport Authority and police.
